Dreams amongst hers (2022)

INSTRUMENTATION

voice, percussion, violin,

Dreams amongst hers began its life as Any bed but one's, a short trio written in 2017 for the Voix Nouvelles Academy. In 2022, it was revised and extended as part of a commission for Renaud Capuçon’s "Nouveaux Horizons" festival. It received its world premiere by soprano Marie-Laure Garnier, violinist Shuichi Okada, and percussionist Emmanuel Jacquet.

In her poem Drowned Man, Fiona Sampson paints two people, together, asleep. Their small movements - the turning (of the back), the crossing (of the legs), the throwing (of an arm) - are echoes of their worlds: at once connected and disparate.

In “Dreams amongst hers”, the singer and violinist share an intimate space of listening. It is a study of invented, non-semantic phonemes and consonants, as they become imbued with meaning.
