The stone the tree the well (2024)
CHORAL 15:00
INSTRUMENTATION
solo voice, SATB chorus, electronics
The stone the tree the well was co-commissioned by accentus choir, Latvian Radio Choir, and Spirito. It premiered in 2024 at Chapelle Corneille - Opéra de Rouen by accentus choir, under the baton of Sigvards Klava. It was created in close collaboration with singer and poet Ganavya Doraiswamy.
The stone the tree the well is a work in two movements that dialogues between soloist and choir, Tamil and English, notation and improvisation.
The first movement opens with Ganavya while the choir joins as an echo: spoken words, open vowels, a distant vocalise; a musical evocation of memory, hidden and elusive. As the choir divides and grows, the hidden appears : kaṇṇā (little one), kaṇṭiyā? (did you see?).
In the second movement, Ganvya’s protest song “a child sees fire” is transformed by the choir into a lullaby: a hymn for a time of drowning; a meditation on dreams, departure, peace, and eternal rest.
